Turkish-Dutch cooperation in urban wastewater treatment

Print this page

Dutch organizations, including Tauw, are working in close cooperation with the Turkish government on a methodology for wastewater treatment in small and medium sized municipalities. Tauw’s role is primarily aimed at providing technological expertise on urban wastewater treatment.

The project is being carried out under the framework of the implementation of the European Council Directive 91/271/EEC of 21 May 1991 on urban wastewater treatment as part of the accession of Turkey to the European Union and is financed by the Dutch Agency for International Business and Cooperation (EVD).

Construction of wastewater treatment plants
Turkey will be facing great challenges over the coming years. The Turkish government's aim is to build nearly 3000 wastewater treatment plants over the next 15 years. These will be mostly small-scale plants. In addition to creating an optimum design, this challenge requires institutional measures. Constructing a water treatment plant is one thing, maintaining and managing it is another matter.

Pilot projects
The execution of the project consists of monitoring four pilot projects: two existing water treatment plants and two new plants still to be constructed. The consortium will advise the Turkish government on technical and institutional issues. Ultimately a handbook will be drawn up, containing optimized solutions for both technological problems and challenging institutional issues.

Tauw is carrying out the project in a consortium with Ameco, based in Utrecht and IBS Research & Consultancy, based in Istanbul. In addition, the Dutch public authorities Senter Novem and Wereld Waternet are involved in the project.
