Tauw has acquired a 15 percent participating interest in the Italian environmental consultancy STEAM. In addition, the international consultants and engineers set up a new subsidiary, Tauw Oil & Gas.

With these two steps, Tauw is further expanding its position as environmental consultant for the international Oil & Gas Industry. Tauw foresees great opportunities in particular in the transition from oil to multi energy sources, and accompanying decommissioning and remediation services of traditional refineries.

STEAM is specialized in Environmental Impact Studies and environmental permits for sectors such as the Oil & Gas and Chemicals Industry. Founded in 1987 and based in Pisa, this consultancy currently employs fifteen staff. Tauw has had its own branch office in Italy since 2000. Its Milan office comprises 20 staff and holds a strong position in environmental due diligence, soil & groundwater, in sectors including the chemical, automotive and food sector. Both companies have been working closely together for the past two years.

It is the intention of Tauw Italia to acquire a majority interest in STEAM in the coming years. Tauw is aiming to become a top player in the Italian environmental consultancy market. In order to realize this goal, Tauw Italia plans to substantially expand and improve their visibility in the Italian market over the coming three years. The focus will be on the multinational industry, in particular the international Oil & Gas industry.

Therefore Tauw Group set up Tauw Oil & Gas last week. This new subsidiary, located in Sicily, will be focussed on the international Oil & Gas industry in both Europe and the Middle East.  Sicily holds a key position in the European Oil & Gas industry. This industry is facing an important transitional phase, states Bram de Borst, CEO of Tauw Group.

'The Oil & Gas industry is characterized by a large number of traditional refineries. Due to the transition to cleaner and renewable technologies, large numbers of power plants worldwide will have to be renovated, reconverted and replaced by new multi-energy facilities. In the Oil & Gas industry large investments are made in the development of renewable energy and other alternative fuel solutions. For such projects highly skilled, environmental expertise is required. Tauw has this expertise and experience. It is consequently a great opportunity for us to assist the industry in this major transition.'
