Safety: Turning theory into practice at the Safety Conference

From road maps to work programmes

The programme consists of 5 road maps:

1. Safe investments and disinvestments
2. Integrated implementation of chemical industry policy
3. Transparency and safety in the industry
4. Spatial integration of (petro) chemical clusters
5. A high-quality knowledge system for the chemical industry

The government, industry and science are working together in this programme with the aim of eliminating all incidents in the chemical industry involving harm to citizens or damage to the environment by 2030. Annemieke Nijhof oversaw the establishment of the road maps and is now overseeing the translation of these road maps into concrete work programmes.

Lectures

Tauw safety experts and occupational hygienists will discuss the road maps in more detail in three talks:

• Aligning education with the professional field
  The road maps show that high-quality safety knowledge is a major challenge for the ‘Chemical Safety 2030’ steering group. That is why advanced safety expert and occupational hygienist Niels Leerling will discuss the role of the Integrated Safety Experts (ISEs) in the professional field on 29 March. He will go into detail about the expectations of businesses and of ISEs themselves after completing their ISE training, and how ISE training courses can be better aligned with the professional field.

• Responsibility for safety
  On 30 March, advanced safety expert Daan van Wieringen will talk about taking responsibility for safety. To illustrate his case he will take an example from practice which shows how expectation management is used to shape Tauw’s safety programme. The safety programme is based on formulating expectations (not just describing what is not allowed) and how employees can interpret these expectations and which tools are available for this.

• Integrated policy implementation
  Road map 2 describes the integrated implementation of policy in the chemical industry, with the aim of sharing knowledge and expertise in an integrated manner. On 30 March occupational hygienist Saskia Vermij will take a look at helpful ideas used in other sectors. How often do we look at what others are doing and make use of good ideas conceived in other fields? Why not? Are we too proud or do we want to come up with everything ourselves?
