Co-CEO of TAUW Group, Ralph van Roessel, was one of 12 CEOs of prominent Dutch companies who committed to the corporate net-zero standard of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Under that initiative, the companies will work towards aligning their operations across their entire value chain with the Paris Climate Accord and thereby contribute to limiting global warming to 1.50C.
Ralph explains, “The most recent IPCC report did not mince words and delivered a final warning to take more climate action before the 1.5 degree ‘point of no return’ is crossed. If we are to prevent further damage, a drastic transformation is needed of all the systems underlying our economy. Governments must step up to the mark and issue policy measures. But time is running out and decision-making is slow in the current political climate. By this Net-Zero initiative, the corporate sector is taking its responsibility by defining ambitious net-zero targets, substantiating them scientifically and subsequently monitoring and reporting on those targets. I am very aware of the responsibility we are undertaking by committing to net-zero. It is also an obvious step for us to take because TAUW has shown over the years that sustainability is part of our corporate DNA. That is underpinned by a long list of projects and it is an area where we want to take a leading role. I am proud that we can contribute in this way and I call on other companies to do the same.”
Jacolien Eijer, Director Sustainability of TAUW Group says: “This is a significant step. The EU has set challenging targets for climate, circular economy and biodiversity. TAUW’s mission is in full alignment with those targets – we strive for a world in which nature and human activity coexist in harmony. TAUW consultants and engineers work tirelessly every day, to offer advice, project management and project delivery around these social issues. It is how they help clients take the right steps towards the sustainable world we aim for. That is our handprint and where TAUW can have the greatest impact. Naturally we give equal consideration to reducing our own footprint. So I am very pleased to see that our company is making this additional effort and I hope many more businesses will follow suit.”
