Project overview

TAUW conducted a Climate Risk Assessment (CRA) for a planned logistics centre in Germany, supporting future development decisions for a site that was still undeveloped at the time of assessment. The study focused on identifying physical climate risks under both current and future climate scenarios and translating these risks into practical adaptation measures.

The CRA provided decision‑makers with early‑stage insight into climate resilience, enabling climate‑aware site acquisition and design choices.

Challenge

Because the site was an empty plot with no existing buildings, understanding physical site characteristics and future climate exposure required scenario‑based assumptions. Long‑term planning for climate risks and resilience measures was therefore complex, particularly regarding accessibility, flooding risk and heat stress under future climate conditions.

Our approach

TAUW applied a structured assessment aligned with EU taxonomy requirements:

  • Analysis of the geographical and environmental context
  • Identification of physical climate risks in line with Annex A of the EU Taxonomy
  • Assessment of climate risks under current conditions and future scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5)
  • Development of site‑specific climate adaptation measures

This approach ensured the CRA remained robust despite limited baseline information.

Results and impact

The assessment delivered:

  • A full physical climate risk profile for the future logistics site
  • Clear insight into climate risks affecting future accessibility and operations
  • Adaptation measures to enhance climate resilience from the design phase onward

The results support informed investment and development decisions, reducing long‑term climate‑related vulnerabilities.

Added value

By conducting the CRA at an early project stage, TAUW enabled climate resilience to be embedded directly into future development plans, supporting sustainable logistics infrastructure
