Project overview

TAUW carried out a comprehensive Climate Risk Assessment in accordance with ISO 14091:2021 for an operational pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in Italy. The facility is dedicated to the production of contrast agents for diagnostic imaging and operates in a highly regulated industrial environment.

The assessment addressed both physical climate risks and transition risks, supporting regulatory compliance and long‑term operational resilience.

Challenge

Key challenges included the availability and quality of climate data and the complexity of translating climate scenarios into site‑specific operational risks. In addition, the client required insight into the site’s adaptive capacity, which depended strongly on the engagement of management and technical staff.

Beyond physical hazards, the project also needed to address transition risks, such as regulatory changes, technological innovation and market developments relevant to the pharmaceutical sector.

Our approach

TAUW applied an ISO‑compliant methodology combining climate science and operational analysis:

  • Analysis of the climate context and future scenarios
  • Vulnerability assessment, including exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity
  • Evaluation of physical climate risks, considering impact and probability
  • Transition risk analysis, covering financial, regulatory and technological aspects

This integrated approach ensured both compliance and strategic relevance.
