PFAS Investigation at the site of a plastics compounding plant

A multi-phase detailed soil and groundwater investigation on PFAS was carried out at the site of a plastics compoundig plant during ongoing operations.
The site is located in a water protection zone approximately 1.3 km from drinking water production wells.
In total 19 soil drillings (down to 5 m bgs) and 19 depth specific direct-push groundwater samplings down to 8 m bgs were performed.
A groundwater pumping test was carried out, and existing monitoring wells and rainwater infiltration shafts were also sampled.

The evaluation of the field data included:

• Identification of PFAS-source: Use of PFBS as flame retardant
• Identification of three main PFAS-source areas (extruder, mixing room, waste storage area for empty containers)
• Calculation of contamination mass in soil
• Calculation of mass flux in groundwater
• Risk assessment with regard to a sensitive receptor situation and recommendation for next steps

Collaboration

The assignments have been completed in close collaboration with the client. Once the client learnt that the use of the flame retardant in the production process has led to a PFAS-contamination in soil and groundwater, a phasing-out process of this product was immediately initiated, followed by inspections of the sewer system and the separator which were partially renewed / refurbished where needed.
Hence, it could be stated at the end of the detailed investigation, that the release of PFBS has successfully been stopped and no future impact from the production process has to be expected.
The competent regulatory authority was involved in the stepwise approach and always informed about the interim results. The final feedback is still pending, but recent communication indicates that the conclusions and recommendations are acceptable for the regulator. Thus, also the interaction with the regulator has been managed successfully.

Solution

The project offered a good insight into the processes of a plastic compounding company and its specific requirements. Furthermore, it has shown, how fast a company can react to regulatory demands and beyond, once the goal is clearly defined.
The client on the other hand has experienced a competent consultant, who supports him in the regulatory process and helps in finding solutions for a more sustainable way of his production. Thus, TAUW’s role in the process turned out to be more that of a proactive partner than simply that of a consultant.
