FrieslandCampina is one of the larger players in the global dairy market. Its products reach over 100 countries. FrieslandCampina produces and sells consumer products such as dairy drinks, infant nutrition, cheese, and desserts in many European countries, as well as in Asia and Africa. It also supplies products to professional customers, including cream and butter products for bakeries and the hospitality industry, and sells ingredients and semi-finished products worldwide to manufacturers of infant nutrition, the food industry, and the pharmaceutical sector.
With its diverse range of products, FrieslandCampina is subject to a broad array of HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) laws and regulations. This not only requires insight into the relevant legislation but also an understanding of its impact on operations — and what measures FrieslandCampina must take now and in the future to remain compliant. Since legislation is constantly changing, this is a specialized area that requires ongoing monitoring. FrieslandCampina engaged TAUW to streamline and monitor their compliance management across more than 20 production sites in the Netherlands.
Since 2016, FrieslandCampina has used compliance management for all its sites in the Netherlands. Together with Pharius, TAUW developed a customized compliance management tool to register applicable legislation per site, implement changes, and monitor them. After visiting each site, we mapped out which legislation applies to which specific location. We periodically inform FrieslandCampina locations about ongoing changes and provide targeted advice. We give specific recommendations about what kind of measures the client needs to take, how to implement them, and when.
Once a year, TAUW HQ organizes a "Compliance Day" for HSE staff from all FrieslandCampina sites. During this event, we update everyone on changes in laws and regulations, their implications for the future, and other current environmental and safety topics. An added benefit is that the representatives from these locations connect more closely with each other, can learn from each other’s challenges, and can raise specific issues, which we then address during the event in a case study format.
Our monitoring system for compliance management and these events help FrieslandCampina to anticipate future developments in a timely manner. In general, effective compliance management ensures that FrieslandCampina not only meets legal requirements but also contributes to broader business goals and sustainability. This enables them to continue having a positive impact on both their operations and society.
