TenneT is a transmission system operator responsible for managing high-voltage grids and connecting renewable energy sources. In the south of the province of Drenthe, it is constructing a new substation to accommodate the rapid growth in renewable energy production and rising electricity demand. TAUW was asked to ensure that this infrastructure development goes hand in hand with nature and species conservation.
The substation is essential to reduce grid congestion and create capacity for solar and wind energy, enabling businesses and households in the region to continue the transition to sustainability energy. However, the construction of the almost 4-hectare site will impact the existing landscape and requires the felling of trees.

With TenneT, we developed an integrated compensation plan that goes beyond simply replacing felled trees to accommodate/facilitate the permitting process. The entire site and its surroundings were ecologically redesigned to create a robust woodland area. Nearly four hectares of new trees and shrubs were planted, using hardy, regional species well suited to the Dutch climate. The area will provide the best environment for species such as the yellow-necked wood mouse.
In areas where overhead powerlines have been removed, space has been created for spontaneous woodland regeneration. The project includes additional measures such as the installation of nest boxes, construction of badger setts and strengthening ecological connections within the landscape. The development is monitored to safeguard species and mitigate impacts on nature values.

This project delivers significant benefits for ecological and societal benefits. It strengthens the national power grid and enhances nature. We are building a better living environment for people, plants and animals. This project is a fine example that the energy transition can be achieved without losing sight of biodiversity. TAUW’s ecologists advised on species selection, as well as planting strategies and ecological design. We recommended locally grown trees and shrubs that are accustomed to the Dutch climate and will attract insects. This project combines infrastructure development with strong ecological value.
TenneT engaged TAUW for our ability to combine technical knowledge with ecological expertise. We selected nature contractors, supervised and monitored the large-scale planting. This project shows that grid development and species conservation can go hand in hand.
